Fall is upon us again, and you know what that means. Changing leaves, pumpkin spiced everything, and cold and flu season. I’ll take the first two, but can we skip past the last one?

Lately at the gym I have noticed more people using the antibacterial spray to clean their machines before and after they use it. My gym even has signs that say to spray off each piece of equipment after you use it. Now I know I am one to harp on gym etiquette, so I like to follow the rules, but as I am spraying down the treadmill, I’m wondering a few things. First of all, it is even cleaning it, secondly did I really get it that dirty, and third this is kind of annoying. So I decided to take action. And get to the bottom of the whole “sanitizing craze.” I mean is sterility really natural?

As a mother to four busy kids who are constantly picking up germs, I’m usually the first one stocking up on hand sanitizer. But lately, the more I research and read about alcohol based sanitizers, I am starting to realize there are some pretty serious downsides. First of all, we all know that there are bacteria around us all day long. There is the bacteria than can make us sick, and then there is the bacteria that we need to stay health (the good bugs).

When we squirt sanitizer on our hands with the promise of killing 99% of all germs, it does just that. The bad, but also the good bugs are gone. Why do we need the good bugs you ask? Our immune system relies on them to pump up our ‘army’ to fight off the bad bugs. So we get sick, less often.

As a health blogger, I am constantly reminding people to check the ingredients and labels on their food. Same thing with skin cleansing products. Did you know that the ingredients in these alcohol based hand sanitizers can disrupt the endocrine system, especially in children? I’m talking hormones here people. Scary stuff…

Let’s face it. Bacteria is a natural part of the human ecosystem. I came across a totally new product that I had never seen before in the skincare world. Mother Dirt is a groundbreaking probiotic product that helps restore balance to the skin, our largest organ. Mother Dirt products focus on the microbiome of the skin, which can help restore moisture, balance oil production and improvements in body odor. Their products include a probiotic body spray (AO+ Mist), Shampoo, Cleanser and Moisturizer.

When it came time to give this concept a try, I have to admit I was a little skeptical. Living in the 2nd driest state in the nation, I tend to use a lot of moisturizer. I was a bit nervous that my skin would be dry and itchy. But I was pleasantly surprised. My skin adjusted. My skin looks and feels healthier than before. And bonus, totally natural. No crazy chemical disrupting my hormones!

Speaking of the gym, I have been short on time lately and sometimes it is just so darn hard to fit everything in. Lucky for you I have created a short HIIT workout that will get your metabolism burning!
